Historic England assessment:
Cracking appeared in the chancel several years ago. Technical advice has been obtained and stabilisation of the fabric is needed. The below ground drainage has been investigated and a new system and soakaway has been installed. Repair works to address the instability of the fabric got underway in 2019. (HE 2020)

Historic England assessment:
The building has suffered from widespread structural movement with vertical cracks to several elevations. The tiled roofs have numerous defects and the junction between nave and chancel is open to the elements, allowing water to penetrate the building. Rainwater goods are defective, Self-set trees in the valley gutter between the north vestry and chancel. There are blocked hoppers elsewhere, and smashed windows.

Historic England assessment:
Externally the church has a cementitious render coat and there is evidence of structural movement to the east end gable. Nave roof covering appears functional. Vestry roof and rainwater goods are in need of repair. Water ingress internally has caused damage to the plasterwork and ceiling panels. The church is currently closed for worship.

There are serious concerns about the tracery work to the very large belfry openings, and the structural integrity is severely compromised in several places. Historic England assessment:
The nave roof south gutter has failed and water ingress over several years has penetrated the wall head. Internally, the south aisle and tower plaster work has been removed to facilitate drying of the fabric. There is a pervasive damp problem at low level. Some structural issues exist at the stair turret junction with the nave. The Churches Conservation Trust completed a repair project in early 2019 to address some of these issues. Further repairs are planned. (HE 2020)

Hodstock Priory Gatehouse

Historic England assessment:
Whilst the house is occupied and used as a wedding venue, the gatehouse is unused and requires
comprehensive maintenance. Historic England has encouraged the development of options for reuse of the gatehouse combined with full repair of the structure.
Following the commissioning of a condition survey, essential repairs have now been carried out. A bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for an educational and restoration project has been considered. (HE 2020)

Church of All Saints

Historic England assessment:
The north aisle has suffered from structural movement and defective ground drainage is suspected. Further investigation into the cause of the movement is needed before repairs are implemented. North aisle buttresses are unstable in places and there is a need for repointing once movement has stabilised. The tower stonework at belfry stage is open jointed and localised repair is needed. The church was subject to heritage crime in 2019 and the interior suffered from water ingress. The interior remains damp. The tower roof is nearing the end of its life. Some pointing and isolated masonry repairs are required. The church undertook a programme of repairs in early 2020 and are keen to undertake further repairs once funds are available. (HE 2020)

Historic England assessment:
Stonework on the south face is very eroded, particularly on decorative plaques and lintel above the gateway; repair is needed. The north face (including plaques) is less eroded, but repointing also needed. The mortar joints to the brick wall are now deeply recessed and in need of repointing. Ivy growth is extensive to walls in particular, and is displacing stone copings. (HE 2020)

Part of a plaster ceiling fell in 2014, requiring the closure of the main part of the building. Investigations early in 2015 into the ceiling structure have revealed the likely cause of the problem. In addition, there are concerns about structural movement to the stair tower and this is being monitored. Below ground drainage works may be needed if found to be contributing to movement. (HE 2020)

The church has been suffering from many leaks. Nave and aisle roof coverings were repaired with a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant in 2010 and a second phase of repairs to transept roofs and tower was completed in 2014. Further roofing and masonry repairs still urgently required in other areas, and this will be carried out as funding allows. The church has been subject to heritage crime. (HE 2020)

Historic England assessment:
Masonry is generally in fair condition but there are poor parapet abutment details
and various localised repairs are evident. There is significant
erosion of jamb stones and jointing to south porch arch
and gable. Roof coverings leak at abutments and there is
water ingress damage internally. A Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund grant enabled roofs and rainwater goods to be repaired in 2016. Other work is
needed.

The hall has been much altered historically and there are a number of significant cracks. There is some loose stonework at high level with some sections at risk of imminent collapse. Roofs are in poor condition. The rainwater disposal is ineffective and undersized. The north elevation is shrouded in vegetation. The outbuildings are partially collapsed. Internally, some areas of ceiling plaster have failed. (HE 2020)

Details: Disused for decades, there was unchecked deterioration and a lack of maintenance. Historic England provided advice to inform consents for repairs and the construction of a foot/cycle path across the viaduct. An application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2017 for this major project was not successful. Historic England awarded a two stage grant in January 2019; development work completed in 2019 and essential repairs commenced in March 2020. Work was temporarily stopped due to Covid-19 but re-started in May 2020.(HE 2020)

Details: The third of the triple chest tomb closest to the church has been dismantled or knocked down and is laid upside down.  The ground beneath is disturbed.  South face of the tomb is badly eroded.  The single chest tomb has ivy growing on it and the inscription is still visible.  Possible inscription on long side worn away.  One tomb has side missing and is open.

Details: Risk Cat related to the windows of the N elevation as a feature that is integral to the significance of this building.  The window frames to this elevation are almost entirely unglazed.  Some glazing bars are missing.  Corrugated metal sheeting boards the windows from the inside.  Paint has worn away revealing the timber which appears to be in repairable condition.  The doors to the ground floor do not have lintels and there is evidence of crude cement repointing over the doors and a stepped crack up to the windows.

Details: Signs of movement, stepped cracking along mortar at south elevation, monitoring of crack and level of cross required. The base shows evidence of having sunk in the area above the culvert.  A large horizontal mortar bed has opened up to the LHS of the culvert and other open joints are visible in this area and on the west elevation of the cross base.  The metal band supporting the front edge of the cross base above the culvert is very corroded and there are signs (loose masonry) that the culvert side walls have eroded excessively and the culvert roof/cross plinth  underside looks to have moved (evidenced by an open joint and slightly misaligned stone).   Cement mortar pointing to plinth is of unknown date, cracked in places and visually inappropriate.

Details: Rainwater down pipe facing north exposed due to paint peeling off, repainting required; new lead fixings to rainwater downpipe are overlapping the original fixings to the wall. Areas of eroded stonework, particularly the arches and hood moulds. Stepped crack along mortar on the south elevation of west wing.  West gable of Priory Church at the northwest corner is fenced off, and has some areas of vegetation growing facing east. Boundary wall at northwest corner – areas of erosion and vegetation growing, bottom of timber door damaged.

HE Update 2020: By 2018, the threat of falling stone fragments from the adjoining priory church ruin meant that this part of the site was not accessible to the public. Historic England awarded a two stage grant for project development and repair work in 2018. Repairs were due to complete in late 2019 but some work was postponed until spring 2020. Work restarted in May, following a Covid-19 delay, but should be complete in mid-2020.

Garden Walls, Seats and Tunnel

Details:  Semi-circular seat to North West is under tree canopy with steps and base of seat suffering from permanent exposure to damp. Moss covering steps and bench of seat, and lichen largely covering all vertical elevations. Start of wall at North West is missing several stones. Large vegetation/tree seedling is growing up through top of the left hand gate pier, pushing and cracking coping stones. Further along the wall areas requires repointing, particularly by seat to North East. Missing coping stones to east wall. In tunnel area of bricks, approx. 1m² suffering from penetrating damp which has significantly eroded the bricks.
